Prime Time

Hi All!

Leah from Live Love Lipstick here with you again.

If there’s one thing that I believe is essential to your makeup regimen, it’s primer.   You wouldn’t paint a wall without first applying a coat of primer, would you? Well then there’s no reason you should “paint” your face or nails without applying it either.

Here are the five types of primer that I consider a “must.”

Face Primer:

I see a huge difference in my face makeup when I use a good primer.  It sets makeup, and gives anr even finish.

How to: Apply it after moisturizer. Before applying the rest of your makeup. it acts like an amazing canvas.

I suggest: My current favorite is Stila’s One Step Correct. It color corrects, brightens, primes, and nourishes all in one.  It helps my makeup stay in place so much longer!  Just squeeze one pump into your hand, blend together, and apply!  I also tested Lanacane Anti Chafing Gel. Because of the consistency, it’s smooth on my skin and my makeup glides on over it. {Best part, it was a $5 drugstore find!} I’ve heard great things about Hourlgass Veil Mineral Primer.

Lash Primer:

As I mentioned in my Mascara for Dummies blog, I swear by lash primer.  It lengthens and conditions and makes a very dramatic difference!

How to: Wipe the wand, remove excess primer and apply before mascara.

I suggest: My absolutely favorite is the Dior Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum, worth every penny.  Before discovering Dior, I was using Smashbox’s Layer Lash Primer which is a little less costly, but still does the job.

Eyeshadow Primer:

This helps create a smooth surface for your shadows to glide on {preventing clumping, ick}. It also helps the shadow last.

How to: Apply it all over the eye, including below. I usually apply mascara next, clean up the mess on my lids and then apply shadow.

I suggest: I do love the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion Tube. However it needs to be rubbed in. I like the Buxom BUXOM Stick Around Eye Primer. It doesn’t require you to rub anything in (which could result in you messing up your fabulous lashes).

Lip Primer:

I make sure to use my lip primer when using a bold lipstick and liner. It helps the color last and makes the lips moisturized, preventing any dreaded drying or feathering.

How to: Coat the lips before applying lipstick and liner.

I suggest: My favorite is the MAC Prep + Prime Lip, which feels amazing on the lips!  Urban Decay also makes a Lip Primer Potion that which always has fabulous reviews.

 Nail Polish Base Coat:

This helps extend the wear of a mani, prevents staining, and creates a smooth nail surface.  Obviously a must.

How to: Apply a coat under your polish cover.

I suggest:  Sally Hansen Diamond Strength Hardener , CND Nail Design Stickey Base Coat and nails inc. Kensington Caviar Base Coat.

Now you are well-equipped with the knowledge and tools to prime away!

xoxo,

Leah
