Cakery Friday: Homemade Nutella

I truly believe that Nutalla should be one of the five food groups. The other four being chocolate chips, Pirates Booty, Rice Chex and sauted spinach {I know the spinach is weird, but I love it enough to make it a food group}. But I’m also no stranger to clean eating and know that if it’s possible to make something yourself, it’s probably better for you. Nutella is no exception. And making this spread is very easy peesy!

Gather all of the ingredients.

This recipe calls for peeled hazelnuts. Here is an easy trick to removing those pesky skins. Boil 3 cups of water with 3 tablespoons of baking soda. Add in 1 cup of hazelnuts. Allow nuts to sit in boiling water for 3 minutes and then immediately transfer them to a bowl of iced water. Place the nuts on a long sheet of paper towel and rub the towel around the nuts. The skins will loosen and you will easily be able to peel the nuts.

Place one cup of peeled hazelnuts in a food processor and blend until butter-like/mealy consistency.

Add in 1/4 cup of dark cocoa powder, 1/2 cup powdered sugar, 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 4 tablespoons of vegetable oil.

After initially blending I decided I wanted it to be thinner and added another 2 tablespoons of oil. This is completely up to you!

And that’s it! Mission accomplished! Now it’s time to eat some Nutella!  {Or more than some}.
