I Am Art-Tastic

A few weeks ago I spotted this on Pinterest.

I was smitten.

I had to make it mine. And tonight {between episodes of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Most Eligible Dallas} I did.

Five mosquito bites, legs covered in red crayon wax and 2 showers later, I made art.

Here’s how:

1. Went to Michaels {pleasure + pain}. Bought a big canvas. 24 by 36 to be exact {on sale for half off during labor day. hooray}. Also bought box of 120 Crayola crayons + small box of 64 crayons to supplement.

2. Removed brown, silver, gold, grey, black, white, tan crayons from said crayon box.

3. Sorted crayons by color. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Pink {I can sing a rainbow. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?}.

4. Used scrap paper to layout exact color order of crayons.

5. Glued crayons onto the top of canvas with hot glue gun. To fill the entire space I used the extra box of crayons to double up on colors that I was a fan of. {Did I mention I live for hot glue guns. Especially ones that cost $2 at Michaels}.

6. Took crayons-glued-on-canvas outside into mosquito-breeding patio. It was 10 PM at this point. Cole thought I was nuts. The temperature was approximately 88 degrees. Yum.

7. Turned blowdryer on hot hot hot. Began melting down crayons. Few accidents ensue {including spraying my legs with red wax}. Note: hold blowdryer directly above crayons to have them bleed down evenly. I have a few blue/green blotches that seemed to go east towards the yellow. Oops. Live and learn. Also, if you want the wax to go down farther keep moving blowdryer down towards wax and drip more. You’ll be shocked how fast the wax melts and then how fast it dries after.

8. Stood outside with blowdryer for 25 minutes. Got bit. Did not care as I love night time art projects.

9. Complained to Cole about mosquito bites while simultaneously gushing over new art.

10. Successful labor day.

xoxo,

Niki

p.s. A part of me wants to go back out with the blowdryer and thicken the wax drips. Another part likes how it looks more dip-dyed this way. What do you think?!?

I love how your crayon art turned out, I too saw it on Pinterest and HAD to make it. Mine was more like 5 hours of melting time, I did the think wax. Check it out to see if you want yours thicker, I think they both work. http://affairwithcolor.com/my-rainbow-project/
